1. LECTURES

Week 1 - INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY & IMAGING
Photoshop has emerge as a widely used photo editing software  and center of  creativity across various fields, including graphic designing, web designing, animation, photography or digital magazine designing.

1. Importance of Photoshop for Graphic Designer
  • Express your creativity
  • Create graphic design
  • Restoration of old images
  • Integrate graphics with text artistically
  • Make use of brushes
  • Change photo colour
  • Rectify mistakes in photographs
2. Photograph Manipulation
Photograph manipulation refers to the alteration of an image using different methods and techniques. In the 1850s, this process include combining several images onto a single negative.

3. Digital Imaging
Digital imaging transforms printed text, artwork, and photographs into digital images using a scanner or other imaging devices.

Techniques :

  • Removing details ("re-touching") used to improve appearance (remove wrinkles, slim down) or remove distracting or unwanted elements.
  • Inserting details used to change facial features, add colour to skin, add elements to a scene in order to change tone of a photograph
  • Photomontage used to pair images to suggest a relationship or create an entirely new image with a composite meaning.
  • False captioning is a context of what a photograph purportedly portrays is falsified to distort the meaning.

3. PRACTICAL - CREATING E-PORTFOLIO

On the first week, we were asked to choose 3 graphic design art works from Pinterest and explain why we like the designs.

The first time I saw this illustration designed by Lê Long, I can really tell the message conveyed through the poster. I can immediately understand the meaning of the photo, because sometimes it relates to me.

The illustration shows that the girl is imagining her book while she is taking a bath. We can tell bay looking at the ships, clouds, and sea animals that seem to emerge from the book around the bathroom. I love the choice of perspective angle of this illustration and how all of the objects in the photo are related to water. The photo also combines reality and fantasy together.

Design #1

Fig 3.1 "STAYCATION" (By Lê Long)

When I saw this photo for the very first time, I was interested and amazed by the design. Even though the photo has a lot of things in it, I like how it doesn’t make it look messy.

This illustration depicts a woman sleeping in a forest, decorated with animals and leaves as an explanation. I like how this illustration is dominated by dark blue-green colours, which makes it seem like a chilly night time with a touch of pink and yellow colours in it.

Design #2

Fig 3.2 Photo by Asia Orlando

When I first saw this photo, I was instantly amazed by the editing. Although it looks very simple, it is the creativity that makes it look very eye-catching.

This illustration shows a man’s sliced forehead as if we could know what was going on inside his mind. The proper use of light and shadow makes the illustration look 3D and realistic. Moreover with the addition of water effects that make it look wet.
