1. LECTURES

Week 7
This week, Mr. Hafiz taught us new techniques that we can use to make our upcoming task.
  • Intertwine: Select objects > Object > Intertwine > Make > Select the areas.
  • 3D Materials: Select object > Effect > 3D Materials > choose one of the options on the panel.

Week 8 (Independent Learning Week)
  • Clipping Mask: Arrange the object(s) to the back > Place the mask to the front > Shift all objects > right click > Clipping mask.
  • Envelope Distort: Arrange the object to the back > Object > Envelope Distort > Make with top object.

3. TASKS

1. Visual References

For this task, we were instructed to create a poster about "Quotes of The Day". I began by exploring some inspirations and references on Pinterest  to help me decide my design concept.

After some research, I decided to go with the quote "Let Your Light Shine Through The Shadow". The concept behind the quote is that even if life is full of challenges, we need to show our spark and ability to overcome these obstacles. We need to always be original, be iconic, and shine to stand out among thousands of people.

2. Sketch and Digitization

I created my first sketch, but I am not satisfied with it. I feel that the composition is somewhat off, and there are a lot of empty spaces in the background. Furthermore, as there is already a lamp in the image, adding an illustration of a light bulb would create a clash. As a result, I've created a new concept. Good thing about this concept is that I can apply the double exposure technique when digitizing the second concept.

Afterward, I started digitizing my poster, focusing on the typography of the quote. I created it in Adobe Illustrator and then moved on to Adobe Photoshop for the photography elements.

As we are required to choose a combination of sans-serif typefaces, I chose 3 different typefaces. I used Roboto for the word "Light," Jost Regular for "Shine," and Changa One for the rest.

I used a photo from my own event, where I was the main character. I wanted to highlight the meaning of the quote, so I emphasized the word "Light" by transforming it into a light bulb using the Pen Tool and Effects to make the 3D effects, while incorporating a double exposure effect to create the illusion of "Shadow". To achieve this, I applied double exposure to my photo with the words "Shadow" and "Light".

To give the poster a serious tone, I played with the filter to change the poster into black and white, drawing more attention on the word "Light". Furthermore, I placed the word "Light" at the centre of the composition, making it the focal point of the poster. To achieve this, I made the words that are in the middle to look larger and brighter.

However, I realized that I had not used a sans-serif typeface for the word "Light," so I decided to revise it and create a sans-serif ligature instead. I started by designing the ligature effects using the Pen Tool. Then, I applied a Gaussian Blur effect to the light bulb and the strokes of the words "Light" and "Shine" to create a glowing effect. On top  of that, I used the Shape Builder Tool to create the bottom part and added a gradient using the Gradient Tool to achieve a 3D effect.

Besides, I felt that the colour of the light illustration was too yellow, especially since the rest of the design was in black and white. After receiving feedback from Mr. Hafiz, I decided to adjust the colour to a softer pale yellow and enhanced the glow to make it appear more radiant.

Moreover, I used a clipping mask to create a gradient effect for the text and stretched the anchor points by creating outlines, then use the Direct Selection Tool to make the text longer.

In the middle of the progress, I came up with another design idea to illustrate the word "Light". I wanted to made the letter "t" as a lamp that shines, with the other letters appearing darker. Even so, I felt that the first design was more unique and conveyed the meaning of the word better than the second one. As a result, I decided to stick with the first design and continued working to finalize my poster. Finally, I added texture to the background to prevent the poster from looking too plain.

4. REFLECTION

Working on this collaboration project was a new and enjoyable experience for me. I particularly enjoyed designing the typography because it gave me opportunity to use my creativity freely, as there weren't many strict rules to follow.

Through this process, I realized the importance of ensuring a well-balanced composition when creating a poster, as it enhances its overall impact. Furthermore, this project allowed me to practice and apply various techniques I have learned before, which not only helped me more familiar with using these techniques effectively.
