Week 4 - Composition
1. Visual References
I wanted to set the background for my character as a forest since my character is a forest guardian-fairy. I wanted to include some different elements, such as trees, flowers, and mushrooms in the forest, so I looked up some references for the elements that I'm going to make.

Mr. Hafiz directed us to use one of the Framed Ink compositions for our background. I chose the "Big, Medium, Small" composition as my guide, because I like how the different sizes of elements add dimension to the design, bring the image to life, and enhance depth into it.

2. Sketch and Digitization
I have made my final grayscale sketch on a paper, featuring a tree as the big element, mushrooms and flowers as medium elements, smaller mushrooms, rocks, and grass as the small elements.

Afterwards, I digitized my sketch in Adobe Illustrator on an A4-sized canvas. I used the Pathfinder tool to add shading to the tree and small mushrooms, and applied the Gradient tool to create a smooth gradation on the mushrooms. Moreover, I added some texture to my elements to make them more realistic and so the background doesn't look too flat and boring.

I felt my background composition needed something extra, so I added leaves to the flowers, placed grass on the bottom, and added rocks to fill the empty areas on the right side. I also made the flowers more plentiful, giving the impression they were blooming throughout the forest.

3. Final Outcome & Background Story
For the colouring, I envisioned a night time forest setting, so I used an overall dark colour palette. Since I want to highlight Eve's bold and dangerous side more, like when she's ready to fight the enemy. I chose violet and purple shades for the pond, mushrooms, and flowers to create a mystical and somewhat ominous atmosphere, reflecting Eve's defensive, guarded mode. As in fact, Purple being the final colour of the rainbow, symbolizes connections to mysticism, magic, and the supernatural. Shades of mauve, indigo, and violet often resonate with those drawn to mysteries and the unknown, adding a sense of intrigue to the setting.
Initially, I had coloured the ground on the left in green, but it didn’t seem to fit the atmosphere I wanted, so I switched to a dark magenta tone. For added detail, I added leaves around the flowers to give them a more realistic appearance.
To enhance the mystical feel, I depicted the tree without any leaves, emphasizing a sense of emptiness and tension, as if reflecting Eve’s state when she feels threatened. In contrast, I made the mushrooms look cute and appealing, with beautiful flowers representing Eve herself. This cute and appealing side is designed to attract attention and deceive those who seek to destroy or harm the forest, then kill them with her deadly plant poison, as her defend mechanism for her beloved forest.

While working on the Vormator character and the background composition for the Pokémon card, I faced many challenges, but I still enjoyed the entire process. It allowed me to improve my skills in using Adobe Illustrator and boost my creativity, as we were given the freedom to create our own unique world for the character.
